Training Your Dog 101 – What You Need To Know

By Jack Wall  Posted on September 22, 2016 In Pet Advice

Are you fed up with a bad dog? If this is the case, your dog could benefit from some training. Spending more time training can provide you with a pet who is more obedient. This article can help you get started.

Get your dog the proper nutrition required for canine health. A dog with an unhealthy diet may manifest several symptoms, including sluggishness and poor behavior. Not only is it unhealthy, it can affect the way they behave. Sometimes, it is possible to improve your pet’s behavior and cooperation simply by improving the quality of his or her diet.

You should not tie up multiple dogs where they can reach each other, no matter how friendly they are. They could tangle the chains in such a way so that one or both of the dogs are stuck or injured. Situations like this can cause dogs of various sizes to cause fatal injuries if not properly monitored. Always err on the side of caution.

When approaching a dog you’ve never met, approach them slowly and offer them the back of a hand to smell. This gives the dog the opportunity to recognize your scent and start to trust you. When the dog becomes familiar with your smell, he will not fear you and will respond to your commands easier.

During the earliest days of training your pet, stick with simple directives. Not only will you achieve gratification due to your success, but your dog will know what acceptable behavior is. You will see more results as you are training this way.

Use the same command for the behavior you want him to demonstrate. Start your commands by calling out his name. This will get his attention so he knows to follow the command. Using your dog’s name lets him know you want his attention.

Only train your pet with positive reinforcement methods. Rewards include treats, kind words and physical touch. Do not shout or strike the dog. This never works, and your dog will sense that you are cluelss. If you want good results, you must be positive, consistent and firm as you train your dog.

Accidents will happen when a puppy is being potty trained. Your training will go more smoothly if you always clean up accidents right away. Smells from urine and feces can linger in a carpet and attract your pet to return to the same spot for elimination. Visit a good pet shop to find products created especially for odor control.

Never, ever reward your dog for bad behavior so that you can quickly stop it. This method will only result in the dog learning to do what it pleases. For example, if you give a treat to stop your dog from barking, you are teaching him to bark for treats.

Training your dog right will ensure that you have a happy and well adjusted dog. Substantial improvements in behavior are possible for even the most difficult dogs with consistent training. If you remember these tips, you will surely be able to be successful in training your dog.
