Training A Dog Correctly

By Jack Wall  Posted on March 9, 2017 In Pet Advice Tagged aggressive dog

Most people love dogs, because of the love and enjoyment they can bring. That said, they have to be cared for daily. Training is absolutely necessary. The article below contains tips you can use to help you train your dog.

Stay consistent when it comes to feeding your dog. Training your pet to expect when to get food will teach him a feeding schedule in which he could adhere to. Soon, your pet will finish the meal before you’re ready to remove its dish.

You will have to repeat commands several times before your dog learns it. It’s very common to repeat a command up to 50 times before your dog can learn it. Just remember to keep trying and be patient. Eventually, your dog will learn.

The first thing that you must do is to command control over your dog. You need to establish your authority, or he will ignore your commands. Avoid allowing your dog to lead you during walks. Instead, walk in front of your dog to show that you are the leader of this pack.

Dogs need routine, so feed your dog at the same time every day. This also helps with training. This allows you to know when your dog has to go and take him outside to do his business before your carpet gets ruined. This schedule also teaches dogs what it means to “hold it”.

When training your dog, make sure to have fun with him too. Playful interaction strengthens the bond between you, and will have your dog striving even harder to please you during training. Training can be a good and fun time with your dog, but you should also set aside time that is just for play.

Teach your dog no response is needed for the word ‘no’. Find positive and supportive ways to train your furry friend. Just simply telling your dog ‘no’ doesn’t help him or her in understanding how to properly react. Dogs need tailored training to pull through.

You should always try to be aware of any other dogs when you are going for a walk with your dog. There are aggressive dogs, and not every owner is at fault. If you happen upon an aggressive dog, walk away from the aggressive dog.

Make sure you know your dog’s grooming needs based off his or her breed. A lot of dogs won’t need much grooming, while others may need frequent groomings. This will keep your dog fresh and reduce the chance of illness.

If your dog is accompanying you on a trip, be sure to bring along whatever your dog needs for sleeping, eating and eliminating. Paper towels, food and water bowls, and bags for waste are critical for a smooth ride. Don’t drag a huge bag of food with you. You can buy some at your destination.

Patience can be hard, but it is necessary with puppy training. Your dog doesn’t understand your language and is not a human being. Your dog only understands your physical language, such as tone of voice and body behavior. They have no way of understanding just why your behavior is a certain way. Keep your cool, and take breaks if you find yourself too frustrated to continue a training session.

By this point, you should be beyond excited at the prospect of working more closely with your beloved pet. Remain patient and reward your pet when he behaves properly. Some of the advice may be a challenge, but it will be worth it.
