Pet health insurance can help; although you will pay a monthly or yearly fee, you will often be covered if a big medical emergency occurs for your pet.

Make sure your house is free of doggy danger. You need to look for hazards around your home that your dog might run into. Secure the trash can, stow way all medications and put away your regular cleaning supplies. Some plants can be lethal, so move them out of your dog’s reach.

Choose the correct flea medicine for your dog. A lot of these medications have ingredients that can be harmful to children and can cause cancer. Ask your vet about alternative treatments that are more family-friendly, and be sure to keep small children away during applications.

If you aren’t sure of the amount of food your dog needs on a daily basis, talk to your vet. Most dog food packages include guidelines but keep in mind that these instructions might not be adapted to your dog. Your vet should be able to let you know what your dog’s specific needs are.

Avoid cheap dog food. Generally, food that is less expensive is not as healthy for your pet due to preservatives and additives put into the food. Check with animal advocacy groups or consumer reviews to find the best dog foods that are recommended by professionals. Your dog will appreciate your research.
