Techniques And Hints For Effective Dog Training

By Jack Wall  Posted on March 14, 2017 In Pet Advice Tagged uncomfortable feeling

All dogs need training, both to teach them useful behaviors and to discourage them from unwanted ones. This article is designed to get you started on training your dog properly.

Question how your dog views things. You may feel burnt out if your dog does not seem to be responding to their training. It might make things easier if you ask yourself what is going on in your dog’s mind. Looking at the world through their eyes could give you new insights about training them.

A puppy should have chew toys to get him through the teething pains. Keep other things out of his reach. Offer your puppy a variety of acceptable items to chew on. A wet frozen washcloth is great for a puppy, who has teething pain, to chew on.

Begin training your dog with a task that will be simple for him to learn. Not only will you get the instant gratification of your success, but also your dog will gain the important foundation of what an acceptable trick or behavior is. Your training will become more productive.

If your dog leaps on you, hold his paws and squeeze them a little so he will know this is not acceptable. This won’t hurt your dog, but it will give them an uncomfortable feeling that will help teach them not to do it again. After a while, they’ll stop jumping due to this uncomfortable feeling.

Try using a different voice for each different purpose. Each type of command should use a different type of tone. Be firm at all times, but vary your tone depending on what you are trying to get the dog to do.

Teach your puppy to wear a collar while playing before you train him to use a leash. Leashes are important for control and identification if you lose your pet.

A great training suggestion is to know the special grooming requirements needed for the dog breed you own. Some breeds need very little grooming, while others need to be groomed meticulously every week. Having your dog groomed keeps them content, clean and limits their susceptibility to disease.

All of the things you teach your dog are going to be a part of their behavior and personality. Realize that you could very well sabotage your own training efforts with innocent activities such as rough-housing. Focus more on encouraging desirable and appropriate behaviors at all times.

Never give up when training a dog. While it may be frustrating at times, if you don’t persevere and constantly reinforce the teachings to the dog, your efforts will be wasted. Food and shelter are lifelong needs for your dog, and training is no different.

Untrained dogs can drive you crazy and ruin your home. If you apply these tips, you should be well prepared to train your dog efficiently.
