Love Your Pet: Tips For Caring For Your Cat

By Jack Wall  Posted on August 24, 2016 In Pet Advice

Cats combine strength, grace, and intelligence to a superlative degree. Felines are possibly the most common of household pets and roam the streets of major cities. Caring for a cat is very rewarding. Cats are strong, smart, and kind of difficult.

Putting a warm tile beneath the bed of an older cat will help it rest comfortably. A terra cotta tile heated in your oven on about 200 degrees and for 15 minutes will do. Keep this underneath your cat’s resting space for extra warmth. If you want, you can change it for a newly warmed tile a few hours later.

If you have a female cat it is important to have her spayed once she becomes old enough. Even if your cat is an indoor cat, if she escapes while she is in heat you might end up with a lot of kittens on your hands. Spray your cat so that this does not occur.

Deter cats from shocking themselves on electrical wires by spraying them with bitter apple. Cords should be covered, especially if your cat tends to chew on them. You can do this by bundling them and tucking them in the cardboard rolls that are used for paper towels. Cats are drawn to wires and cords, so you should keep them out of sight and out of mind if they are not being used.

It can be hard to make your cat stay off the counter. Cats enjoy heights, as they can monitor events from their perch. It helps to provide your cat with certain high spaces where it is allowed. Sometimes strategically placing a tall cat tower near your kitchen will help.

Cats will be up during the night more often than not. Your cat will probably be very active during the night. If you have trouble sleeping because of cats, you may want to close the door to your bedroom. This will reduce the frequency that they wake you up.

The litter box for your cat needs to be in a good location. Don’t put it close to your cat’s food or in an area that gets too much traffic. To prevent a strong stench, be sure this space is well-ventilated. Both you and your cat will reap its benefits.

When your cat accompanies you on a trip, remember to consider the health of their ears. You may like music loud and booming, but a cat will prefer lower volumes as their ears are more sensitive. Reduce the volume of the music and keep the windows up; let your cat rest!

While cats are good pets for children generally, smaller children may treat them too roughly. Teach your kid how to properly handle a cat. Show them how to gently pick kitty up and what kinds of activities are appropriate. Cats have more fragile bones than dogs so it is important to treat them with care.

You’ll be able to run circles around your cat once you have read these and other cat care tips. Before you know it, they will know where they are and are not allowed. Although training a cat is typically more difficult that training a dog, most cats end up trained and well mannered.
