Intriguing and inquisitive, cats are the preferred pet for millions of people. If you’re going to own one, you must know all you can about proper cat care. Read here about some ways to achieve your goals as a good cat owner.

If your cat is older or sick, a heating pad may provide comfort. Simply heat a terra-cotta tile in a 200 degree oven for 20 minutes. Wrap it tightly in a towel and place it under the cat bed. Replace it every three hours or so.

You should not use products designed for other animals. Products designed for dogs or other animals could cause a negative reaction from your cat. One product in particular to pay close attention to is any remedy for fleas and ticks. Your cat can die if you use a dog flea product on it. If you treat your dog for fleas, make sure you keep the cat away for several hours following the application.

Put a collar on any cats which go outside. Cats sometimes travel a bit when outside, and a tag prevents any mishaps due to your cat being lost. Some required information on the tag would be the cat’s name and your personal phone number.

It can be tough to keep cats off the countertops. They love being above everything so that they can watch it all. It helps to provide your cat with certain high spaces where it is allowed. Placing a cat tower near the kitchen will help the cats to not lay on the counter.

Be considerate of your cat’s preferences while traveling. While you may like to crank up the stereo when you go cruising, your pet probably prefers you keep the volume down. Try turning down your tunes or keeping it off to make your cat’s trip better.

If you’re getting a kitten for your children, discuss this with them before bringing the cat home. Let your children know which areas of the house are off-limits for the cat. Make sure that your children know if the cat is strictly an indoor cat. Creating rules and boundaries will help the children learn what is allowed.

Try and figure out why kitty is meowing. Over time, you will pick up on the reasons why your cat is making this gesture. The cat may want something to eat or to get let out. Pay attention to her cues, and you can understand your cat that much more.

Cats feel safest in an elevated location. To make your cat really happy, give it a place to safely survey its area. Placing a shelf or two up high will not take up too much space in your home. You can also add a small bed or blanket at the top.

Cats are excellent pets but being a cat owner comes with certain responsibilities. To make sure your cat remains happy and healthy, you must become educated on how to care for them properly. Take these suggestions to heart so you can learn to be a great cat owner. It is very likely that your feline companion will be very thankful.
