Kitty Advice Every Cat Owner Should Read

Cats are very different from other pets. They are great house pets, seeing as they are so independent and smart. To ensure that your cat is getting the proper care, it may take a bit of work. Keep reading to find out how to learn more about taking good care of your cat.

Cats are curious by nature, which can end up getting them into trouble. If they have a collar on, this might prove to be a safety risk if they happen to get stuck. A breakaway style collar will literally “break away” if pulled too tight. This can make the difference in whether your cat have nine lives or only a couple of them.

Spraying the electrical cords in your home with a bitter apple solution helps keep the cats from chewing on them. If your cat likes to chew cords, hide the cords as best you can. If you have any loose cords around your home, try stuffing them into a used paper towel roll. If you have electrical cords laying out that are not being used, put them away as cats can play with them and then move on to live electrical cords.

A cat can do a lot of damage to your furniture with its claws. If you find your cat shredding your furniture, consider purchasing a scratching post or cat tower. Encourage them to scratch that instead. Although this may take time, your cat should eventually claw the device rather than your furniture.

It’s not easy convincing your pet that the kitchen counter is a no-cats zone. Cats love being up high so that they can see. You may be able to battle this issue by giving your cat a high place to chill. Keep your cats off the kitchen counter by placing their towers near the kitchen or even in it.

Consider having your cat fitted with a microchip. Even cats that live their lives entirely indoors can suddenly escape out a window or door. A collar and identification tags can help bring your pet back to you. But experts point out that collars that do not snap apart quickly if your cat gets it caught on a branch or even a bush can accidentally strangle your cat. Microchips are tiny and contain all your contact information. Most shelters and veterinarians can scan your pet to read the information on the chip, and the chip cannot be lost since it is beneath the skin.

Never let your cat experience frequent boredom. Just like dogs, cats need playtime and physical exercise, too. Too frequently this need is overlooked by owners. Bored cats will quickly wreck your home or become obese. Spend time playing with them, and go through a variety of toys to find ones they like and will play with while you’re busy, too. Be sure your cat has something they can climb and something they can scratch if they stay inside.

If you make time to learn about proper care, cats can be great pets. Be sure to master the advice that you have just read. Put everything you’ve learned to use to keep your cat happy and healthy.
