How To Properly Care For Your Cats

By Jack Wall  Posted on May 20, 2017 In Pet Advice

Cats have been the companion of choice by many for hundreds of years. These animals have been portrayed in musicals, movies, and poems. It shouldn’t be surprising then why cats feel like they are the ones running the show! The below article will help you take control over your cat’s care.

Local rescue organizations are a great place to look for a new pet cat. Shelters all over the country are crowded with marvelous cats, and most provide veterinarian care with the adoption fee. Adopting your cat through a shelter means you are helping to control the cat population and saving a life at the same time.

Keep your older cat comfortable by placing a heated tile underneath its bed. Bake a one-foot tile made from terra cotta in the oven at 200 degrees F for around 15 to 20 minutes. Then, wrap this up into a towel and place it underneath your cat’s bed. If you want, you can change it for a newly warmed tile a few hours later.

If your cat is female, you need to get it spayed at the proper age. Whether or not she typically goes outside, she may escape while in heat and you might have kittens! Getting your cat spayed is the best in regards to prevention.

Dog products shouldn’t be used on cats. If you try to use products meant for dogs, it can make your cat sick, or even kill him. One product in particular to pay close attention to is any remedy for fleas and ticks. Canine flea medications are strong and often made from a different formula than the feline version. They can cause death in cats. Once you use flea prevention products on your dog, it should be kept separately from the cat for hours.

Your cat most likely spends quite a bit of time grooming. Hairballs are more common in long-haired cats. There are special foods you can give to your cat to reduce this problem. Some foods are enriched in fibers and vitamins to facilitate the digestion of the hairballs.

Online outlets offer better prices for cat medicine than vets. In some cases you may not be able to buy online, in the case of emergencies, for instance. But, for routine medications, this can be a budget-saver.

If you’re traveling with your cat, take care to remember their ears. You may love belting out your favorite tunes as you drive on the freeway, but your cat probably enjoys softer sounds. Reduce the volume of the music and keep the windows up; let your cat rest!

Little kids shouldn’t be left alone near cats. Always train your child the proper way to handle a pet. Teach them which activities are good and how to properly pick your cat up. Cats have weaker bones than dogs and need more gentle treatment.

If your cat is excessively meowing, try to figure out why. If you live with a cat for any amount of time, you will soon start to understand what your cat wants when she meows. She may be hungry, or she may want you to let her outside. Getting to know your cats cues will help you to interpret her meows.

Sometimes, cats may think they know it all. However, by utilizing these tips, you can regain control over your house and show your cat who’s in charge. Cats are great animals to have around; learn more about them so that you can enjoy them even more.
