Are you a dog owner, or did you have a pet at another time in your life? If you answered yes to this question, you know the benefits of having an animal in your house. Still, as with anything in life, the more you know, the better. The following article breaks down the different techniques that you must learn.

Be sure your house is dog-proofed. Before you bring a new dog home, make sure the whole area is safe. Do not have any pills out in the open and put all supplies in cabinets. Certain common house plants are toxic, so remove them or keep them out of reach.

Hugs are great, but avoid kisses. Dog kisses are adorable, but your dog’s mouth is really dirty. Dogs tend to dig through garbage cans, drink out of toilets and explore the hind quarters of other animals. Your dog’s mouth is not really any cleaner than a human’s mouth. This couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Dogs don’t talk so you should learn his non-verbal language. If when meeting a new dog or person you find your dog is filled with dread, remove him from the situation. You might cause your dog to bite someone or another dog. Always be on the look out for non-verbal hints. If you see them, allow your dog to guide you in the next action you will take.

Don’t give table scraps to your dog. Not only will table scraps turn your dog off on their regular food, but it will also teach them to constantly beg. Table scraps can negatively affect the dog’s health and cause digestive issues or obesity. Keep the dog away from your table when you eat to avoid any temptation on both parts.

In addition to verbal commands, employ a variety of hand signals when training your dog. This is a very effective way to communicate with your dog. Try both ways of giving commands to see what works best.

Be sure to show your dog lots of praise and love when they do something good. You need to reward good behavior. This will also give your dog incentive to be good.

Never give your dog a real bone to chew on. Rawhide limits the danger when your dog is chewing. Rawhide is very healthy and will help your dog develop some strong teeth. Never ever give him a real bone!

Dog ownership brings great rewards. When you have the right information, it can increase the rewards and the enjoyment. You ought to know more about dogs, since you have this piece. Use what you have learned here and you will have a great time with your pet!
