Dogs offer an amazing capacity for love and companionship. It is important, then, that you learn everything you can about taking care of your pet and making sure he lives a happy life. This article is going to teach you what to do so read over it.

When you get a puppy, have him fixed at around two years old. Statistically speaking, dogs who are “fixed” live longer lives and are less prone to cancer. It also keeps dogs from humping, running away from home or becoming violent at puberty.

Store your prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines in a safe place where your dog cannot get them. Your dog could be seriously injured or killed by ingesting a couple of small pills. If the dog does consume some medication, contact your veterinarian immediately.

You shouldn’t allow your pet off your property if it’s not wearing a leash, even if he is extremely well-behaved. Wild animals can get his attention and cause him to run out into the street, or a provocation could startle him and cause unpleasantness with other dogs or people. It is your job to keep your dog safe, and to keep him from harming anyone else or causing anyone problems.

Ask the vet about how much the dog should eat each day. Simply reading the label on your dog food package may not be enough; your dog may have special needs. Ask your vet for the proper amount based on your dog’s needs.

Buy or build a dog house if he is going to be outside for long periods in the winter. Especially if your dog’s feet get wet, exposure to very cold temperatures for long time periods can cause stress and other health issues. Always protect him from wind, sun and rain by making sure he has a dry shelter to go to.

When buying your dog’s food, do not get the cheap stuff. When you look at the big picture, it is good for your dog to consume nutritious, good quality food. Although the food may cost more, you know that your dog is receiving the correct nutrients from quality food.

If your vet has given you medication or special instructions for your dog, make sure that you follow them. Your dog likely will not enjoy wearing a cone, but the vet prescribed it for good reason. Vet recommendations are for the health and well-being of your dog and failure to adhere to them could result in serious problems.

Your dog needs plenty of affection. Many owners inadvertently spend more time focusing on their pet’s negative behaviors than on all the good things they do. This may eventually cause problems. You should mostly focus on praising and petting your dog when you notice a good behavior. Your dog’s behavior will improve because of your new technique.

There are many benefits to owning a dog, gaining a best friend being one of them. Still, most owners don’t know exactly what to do to help their pet remain happy and healthy. The above advice can be used for times to come.
