Cat Questions And Answers To Help Make Ownership Easier

A cat is a very intelligent, quick, and agile animal. A new pet could be a great addition to your household but keep in mind that a cat is also a responsibility. Learning to coexist with such animals indoors is a different story. Such intelligent, quick animals can be stubborn and need special techniques.

If you have drape cords in your home, keep them away from your cats. These can cause your cat to choke if they get a hold of it. This may harm or kill them. Secure your cords so they are out of the way and out of sight.

Check with your shelter before you purchase a cat. Shelters always have plenty of cats available and adoption fees are usually very affordable. Adopting your cat at a shelter allows you to save a cat’s life while also helping mitigate overpopulation.

Cats enjoy getting into small spaces. If your cat wears a collar they might get hurt, and stuck. The advantage to a breakaway type collar is that if enough pressure is put on it, it will just let go rather than strangle the cat. This could help save your cat if it gets caught in a tight spot.

You can also consider outfitting your cat with a chip so you can monitor its whereabouts. Even an indoor cat can get the urge to run out of a door or leap through a window. A tagged collar might help get kitty home, but it can just as easily come off if snagged on a branch. Microchips are extremely small, but they can hold all the same information as an identification tag. They are impossible for your pet to lose, and most vets and shelters have equipment that can read these chips.

Do not isolate the litter box in a distant place. Don’t put it in a busy area, and keep it away from your cat’s food. You’ll want to place the box in a spot with good ventilation to avoid unpleasant smells. Both you and your pet will appreciate that.

Try figuring out why the cat is purring. When your cat is a member of the family, their sounds start to become familiar to you. This makes it easy to determine what various meows might mean. A meow could signal anything from hunger to a desire for affection. You should pay attention to these cues and you will eventually learn to decipher them.

Understand that cats enjoy being elevated. To make your cat happier, give him a lookout perch where he can check out the area. If you’re averse to cat trees for some reason, a shelf without breakable items will work. Install a small bed for your cat or a comfortable blanket.

It is very difficult for you to outwit your cat. Before long, your cat will understand what they can and can’t do in your house. While they’re not as easy to train as a dog, they can be well-trained and be made into well-mannered companions for their owners.
