Advice And Tips On Training Your Dog

By Jack Wall  Posted on August 6, 2016 In Pet Advice Tagged dog outside

Dogs have common traits regardless of their breed. You should try to think like a dog and you will have no problem with training. This article will shed some light on how dogs think for anyone who is a little clueless in this arena.

Stay consistent when it comes to feeding your dog. Train your dog to understand that the food bowl will be removed 10-15 minutes after you have fed him. This will help get him on a schedule. Your dog will learn to finish eating before you take the dish away.

Don’t reinforce your dog’s negative behavior by accident. This means don’t give your dog treats or attention for something he should not be doing. If you wish to keep your dog from begging for table scraps, don’t encourage him by slipping him a morsel one night or allowing others to do so.

Give your dog more freedom as he or she gets further along in the training program. If you can instill a healthy sense of obedience with an appreciation for your love, you and your dog are guaranteed to enjoy your time together. Be cautious on not giving your dog too much freedom right away, because this could have a bad effect when it comes to your dog’s training.

When it’s time to introduce house training to your dog, put him on a consistent schedule of eating and elimination. This will help you know when you have to take your dog outside, before he ruins your carpet. When a dog has a schedule, they also learn the valuable skill of “holding it” until you take him for his next scheduled trip outside.

When you are training your dog, be mindful of the time spent in one session. Your dog is going to get bored doing the same thing over and over. This is why you need to limit the time of your training sessions to around 10 minutes.

Make a point to enjoy your time with your dog while you are training. If you do so, your dog will feel closer to you, and even respond to training better. Having fun with your dog during training is one thing, but playing and having fun with your dog outside of training is also necessary.

Your dog needs to understand that ‘no’ means they need to stop what they are doing right away. When training your dog, you need to find positive ways to enforce your training. When you say “no”, your dog does not understand how to react. Every situation and dog is different and their training should be tailored accordingly.

To make sure your dog pays attention to you, you should use its name as often as possible. By using it as much as possible during the first weeks you own him, your puppy will learn that this sound is in reference to him. Make the name simple and easy for the puppy to recognize.

When traveling with your pet, ensure you pack all the necessary equipment. Items like food and water bowls, bathroom bags and paper towels are important in having a very relaxing ride. You can purchase food, so this is not a high priority item.

You will be a better master if you understand your dog. If your dog doesn’t understand you, then how can he learn from you? Now that more knowledge has been gained about dog training, it should go smoothly.
